Copacabana region

World famous scenery

When we talk about Rio de Janeiro, the name Copacabana soon springs to our minds. The neighbourhood is known the world over for its stone pavement in black and white, its privileged location – with beautiful views of Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Corcovado – as well as one of the most famous parties in the world: the fireworks display on New Year’s Eve, which attracts millions of Brazilian and foreign tourists every year.

The estimate is that around 150 thousand people live in the area, which has already been the stage of events that have brought big names from the international and Brazilian music scene, like the Rolling Stones and Roberto Carlos. Because of its location, Copacabana beach is considered to be the heart of Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone and will play an equally vital role at the 2016 Olympics. The post card will become one of the most beautiful competition venues at the Games.

Racewalking, road cycling, open water swimming, triathlon, sailing, beach volleyball, rowing, canoeing and paratriathlon athletes will indeed feel privileged, as they will have the opportunity to turn the Copacabana’s view into an even more unforgettable moment. These are the events that will be held at the sporting compound, which will include Flamengo Park, Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, the Marina in Gloria, the Copacabana Fort and of course, the beach itself.

Marina in Gloria

Rio 2016

The Marina in Gloria was the first venue to be tested for the Olympic Games, in a stage of the Sailing World Championship. The test event took place in August 2014. A year later, the second test event was held there.

In order to ensure that the necessary revamping work takes place sustainable, in July 2013 a special commission was set up with members from the National Artistic and Historic Heritage Institute (IPHAN), Brazil’s Institute of Architects (IAB) and City Hall. The group established parameters for the use of the area at the marina, focusing on the cultural landscape value of Flamengo Park. These parameters were published in the Federal Official Gazette in March 2014.

Some of these parameters are as follows: the project has to be integrated to the outline of the cove and Flamengo Park; there is a limit of 12 metres above sea level, as the maximum height for buildings; the built-up area may not exceed 10 thousand m²; no fence will be put up on the land area of the marina, thus allowing access to the public and the park's users.

The venue is in Flamengo Park, in the city centre, with the Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Corcovado in the background. One of the biggest innovations will be the building of a temporary pier for 10,000 spectators on Flamengo beach, in front of the area where the gold medal final course will be implemented.
