Pan American Games' legacy

The region of Deodoro, located in Rio de Janeiro’s West Zone, will host the equestrian, cycling – mountain bike and BMX -, modern pentathlon, shooting, canoeing – slalom -, hockey, rugby and basketball competitions. In addition, it will host the 7-a-side football, shooting, equestrian and fencing events for people in wheelchairs at the Paralympic Games.

Surrounded by green areas, Deodoro has strong military influence. The region is home to Brazil’s biggest barracks and has the highest concentration of military personnel in Latin American, with 60 thousand people.

In 2007, during the preparation for the Pan American Games, the moving around of athletes in Deodoro worked as an encouragement for young people in the area to engage in sport activity.

Now, as the region will play an important role at the 2016 Games, the expectation is for the community to show an even higher interest in sport, during and after the competitions.

In July 2014, Rio’s City Hall started the construction works at the Deodoro Sports Complex. In addition, as it has hosted events at the 2007 Pan American Games and the 2011 World Military Games, 60% of permanently built competition areas - the National Shooting Centre, the pool used in the modern pentathlon, the National Equestrian Centre and the Hockey Centre - only need some modifications.

Another three permanent facilities will be built: The Deodoro Arena, the BMX track and the canoe slalom course. The mountain bike track, rugby arena and the combined event area (part of the modern pentathlon) will use temporary structures. Interventions will be coordinated by City Hall and use federal government resources. Works will be finished in the first quarter of 2016.

After the Olympic Games, the canoe slalom course and the BMX track will be part of the Radical Park, which will be the event’s sport legacy for the region. Covering an area of 500,000m², the park will be the city's second biggest, only behind Flamengo Park. Sport facilities will be put to combined use, like the Olympic Training Centre, which will be used by high performance athletes and the population, for leisure related purposes. The facilities are being built in an area lacking in leisure options for the practice of outdoor activities. In addition, the area has a high concentration of young people.

As over half of the necessary permanent facilities for the Games have already been built at the Deodoro Complex, construction endeavours will be of a simpler nature, thus, ensuring speed and delivery.

Sport facilities

Deodoro Arena (Youth Arena)

The Deodoro Arena will be a new venue, located at the heart of the Deodoro region, less than 300 metres away from the Vila Militar train station and within walking distance of the other venues where the other events will be held.

Rugby and Modern Pentathlon Arena (Deodoro Stadium)

The Rugby and Modern Pentathlon Arena will host the Modern Pentathlon´s Equestrian and Combined Event (shooting and running) competitions, and rugby competition. This temporary structure will be built beside the Deodoro Arena and the Water Sport Centre. As the structures will be near to one another, it will allow spectators and the Games' accredited clients to move between them on foot.

National Equestrian Centre

The National Equestrian Centre is located in the Deodoro Nucleus, next to the National Shooting Centre. The centre was built for the 2007 Pan American Games and designed following standards established by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) for international competition. The compound has an approximate area of 1,000,000.00m². The facilities will be refurbished and increased for Rio 2016. The cross-country track, as well as the ones used for training, jumping and dressage will be increased and adapted. A new veterinary clinic will be set up and lodgings will be built for attendants and vets (72 three bedroom apartments), which will remain as legacy after the Games.

National Shooting Centre

The National Shooting Centre was built for the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio following standards provided by the International Federation. Therefore, it will only need some small adjustments for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The centre has permanent facilities for athletes and technical staff, and it is fully equipped for all shooting events.

Modern Pentathlon Water Centre

The Modern Pentathlon Water Centre will be the stage of the swimming part of the modern pentathlon. The other events will take place in two other venues: the Deodoro Arena (fencing) and the Rugby and Modern Pentathlon Arena (equestrian and combined event). The venues will be located at around 300 metres of distance from each other, which will allow spectators and the Games’ accredited clients to follow all the events closely. The pool will be renovated.

National Hockey Centre

Deodoro is home to Brazil’s national hockey squad. At the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio, the hockey events, plus the 5-a-side and 7-a-side football were held there. The new centre, which will be built, will meet the requirements necessary for Olympic competitions to be held there. Both courts will be modified. Changing rooms will be built, as well as permanent grandstands in the main court and an administration centre. During the Games, the Hockey Centre will have 8,000 seats in the main court, 2,500 of which will be permanent, and 5,000 temporary seats  in the secondary court,

Rio Radical Park

BMX Olympic Centre

The BMX Olympic Centre will be located in the Radical Park. A permanent BMX track will be built, with courses between 300 and 400 metres. The support areas will use temporary structures.

The stadium will have a permanent 280 metres long course of rapids.
