Rio 2016

Olympic and Paralympic Village will provide remote check-in and luggage drop-off for athletes

Goal is to streamline and facilitate operation of the Rio de Janeiro International Airport (Galeão)

A successful experience in the London 2012 Olympic Games will be replicated in the Rio 2016 Games: remote check-in and luggage drop-off for athletes and all other residents of the Olympic and Paralympic Village. Check-in will be available from stations in the Village, followed by luggage drop-off to the Rio de Janeiro International Airport - Galeão. This was a requirement by the organisers of the Rio 2016 Games, and it was widely discussed by the 27 agencies that make up the Special Operations Technical Committee (SOTC) under the National Commission for Airport Authorities (Conaero) and coordinated by the Civil Aviation Secretariat. Authorization was provided by the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) on an exceptional basis.

This measure is intended to streamline and facilitate the operation of Galeão Airport by establishing a specific channel for baggage and special sports gear

Organisers of the Rio 2016 Games conducted simulations to test and approve the final flow of baggage to be processed during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. According to estimates by the Civil Aviation Secretariat, over 1 million athletes, delegations members and tourists will use Rio's airports, and 4.7 million pieces of luggage will be processed during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Airline industry

The Ministry of Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation recently released the Civil Aviation Industry Planning Manual for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a major operating and planning agreement covering the 40 airports that will put in place a special operations scheme during the Olympic Games. The document is the culmination of about 400 hours of discussions, technical analyses, review of procedures, alignment and cooperation actions among the 27 agencies in the CTOE, and it will provide a key legacy for the airline industry in Brazil, especially in terms of accessibility.
